Whispering Pines
2011-02-14
$26 (cart included), played on Friday, February 2011 at noon
Our group of snow refugees played here 2-10-11, a nice crisp day.
The Country Club Of Whispering Pines, West Course is about average for the Pinehurst area: has a couple of very nice holes, but most are kinda routine. Some "hidden" water in spots, especially on the back nine, that is not visible from the tee, so be careful. Conditions were pretty good for the time of year: fairways were all brown (more on this later), but greens were in decent shape, and rolled true, if a bit slow. Bunkers were also pretty good (not that I got in that many of them!).
To our dismay, we learned that the club, which has two courses, is in Chapter 11. Thus, no money to overseed the fairways and green them up. This despite a very nice clubhouse facility with a sit-down restaurant, meeting rooms, ball room (they apparently do lots of weddings, and so on), etc. We saw lots of privately owned fancy golf carts, so the membership is not a group for whom membership fees seem to be a budget breaker, and there was a good bit of play on the East course on the day we were there. So, it's not clear at first glance what the fiunding problem might be.
There are also several other courses in the area in financial difficulty, including The Pit, and Foxfire, which also has two courses. Anyway, Whispering Pines is a decent course, and a cut above The Carolina, Knollwood, Midland, and several others. Worth a visit...I hope it stays open.
Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
Condition of Course, Price, No Houses on Course, Pace of Play, Staff, Pro Shop
