A tornado in April 2011 caused a lot of destruction to the course. It has a good layout, which was enhanced by the scenery created by the trees along the sides of the fairways. Many of those trees were downed by the tornado. The grounds crew has done an outstanding job of removing the fallen trees, but unfortunately the course no longer has as much charm as before. It is still challenging to play, and I hope management plans to plant new trees to bring back the scenery that made the course as aesthetically appealing as before. Alabama Parks should consider having the greens at Joe Wheeler State Park refurbished by the same company that did Lake Guntersville's green. The greens at Lake Guntersville are nothing short of awesome since they were refurbished.

The greens were recently rebuilt and given completely new contours, which made this course much more enjoyable. The fairways were in excellent condition. The greens were very firm, which was to be expected since they were just put in. Very scenic, hilly and wooded. The pro shop is typical for a state park golf course - very basic with no frills. This one also had no snack bar. All in all, great golf. If the pro shop was updated and included a snack bar it would be a great experience overall.
